Quinta do Silval is located in the Douro Demarcated Region, known for its excellent wines and outstanding beauty and listed in 2001 by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
The region where Port Wine comes from is one of the oldest and most beautiful regions in the world. Wine production started some 2,000 years ago, when the Western Roman Empire occupied Portugal.
In 1756, during the reign of King José I, this wine region received, for the first time ever, the designation of Demarcated Region from the Prime-Minister and future Marquis of Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, practically one hundred years before the Bordeaux region did.
