The history of Quinta do Silval in the Douro Demarcated Region as a producer of quality wines dates back many years, producing both generous wines (Port wines) and still wines (DOC Douro). The Estate has about 22 hectares of vineyard spread across the famous parishes of Vale de Mendizand Ronc\u00e3o, about 6 Km from Vila do Pinh\u00e3o, all A-rated, the highest possible vineyard classification in the Douro Demarcated Region.<\/p>\n
The production of Port Wine by Quinta do Silval is centuries old, as is its storage in wine-cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, from where they are exported. Wine used to be carried on the typical Rabelo boats down the river from Vila do Pinh\u00e3oto the wine-cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia.<\/p>\n
The owners of Quinta do Silval descend from one of the three Magalh\u00e3es family branches, a family that has always lived in the Tr\u00e1s-os-Montes e Alto Douro region, such as the explorer Fern\u00e3o Magalh\u00e3es, from the neighbouring town of Sabrosa, and Torquato de Magalh\u00e3es, one of the famous \u201cadvocates\u201d of Douro, and a former owner of Quinta do Silval.<\/p>\n
In mid-19th century, more precisely in 1870, Quinta do Silval was already producing and selling Port Winebottled under its own trademark, Torquato Magalh\u00e3es. The labels are packed with history and are showcased at the Rural Hotel Quinta do Silval.<\/p>\n
The corporate image of Quinta do Silval, recently upgraded, seeks to convey the history and tradition of both of the Quinta do Silval and of the Magalh\u00e3es family.<\/p>\n
Quinta do Silval Estate enjoys a privileged location, right in the heart of the Douro Demarcated Region, the oldest wine production region in the world. The whole vineyard is A-rated and is planted with the noble grape verities of the Douro region. The geographical diversity of the vineyard plots is rich, with an altitude ranging from 100 m and 500 m, excellent exposure to sunlight in all directions, and schist soils permeated with clay fragments.<\/p>\n
These particular features make the wines so unique.<\/p>\n
The oldest vineyards in Quinta do Silval are about 85 years old and the youngest about 25. The main grape varieties are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. In the oldest vineyards we also find the Tinto C\u00e3o and Malvasia Preta varieties.<\/p>\n
